SAN RAFAEL

Going South along Route 40, southbound, we find the City of San Rafael. This city and its surroundings are the last wine producing oasis in the Province of Mendoza. This region sits on a cultivated plain irrigated by the Diamante and Atuel rivers and presents a Northwest - Southeast slope. The maximum altitude on this slope is 750 meters in Las Paredes, going down to 485 meters in General Alvear.
The Southern Mendoza Zone, located between 34.5° and 35° south latitude, includes the departments of San Rafael and General Alvear and stands at the foot of the principal mountain range. A total of 22,000 hectares are planted and approximately 200 wineries exist. San Rafael and General Alvear represent 18% of the vineyards in the Province of Mendoza.
In this region, the tourism has obtained a special nuance. The south of Mendoza is one of the most searched destinations for adventure and for the contact with nature. One of the options is to take advantage of the many dams to practice kayak and rafting. The place also offers the conditions to do trekking, mountain bike and cavalcades. The rainbow trout fishing is another possibility for the tourists.
This region includes the districts of Las Paredes, Cuadro Benegas, El Cerrito, Cuadro Nacional, Monte Comán, La Llave, Goudge, Rama Caída, Cañada Seca, Las Malvinas, Negro Quemado, Villa Atuel, Real del Padre, Jaime Prats, City of San Rafael, Carmensa and General Alvear.
The Denomination of Origin (DOC) San Rafael, issued in 1993, includes the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chenin, Tocai Friulano, Semillon, Torrontés, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Barbera D’Asti and Bonarda varieties which, in turn, form the basis of this region’s wines.
